1. Talk To A Lender & Get Pre-Approved.

Unless you intend to purchase a home with cash, most sellers will require that you submit a Pre-Approval letter with your offer on a home. In essence, this is a letter from your lender of choice stating that they have reviewed your financial qualifications and have approved you for a mortgage that fits your current financial circumstances. The process of getting pre-approved isn't complicated, but it will require that you provide financial verification information to your lender, so it helps to have this taken care of in advance. Additionally, this will allow you develop realistic expectations concerning your budget for purchasing a home.

Taking time to consider and write down what you are looking for in a home will allow you to paint a better picture of your dream home for your agent. By doing so, your agent is able to show you homes that better fit your criteria and prevent wasting time looking at homes you wouldn't like. It also allows you to quickly evaluate options based on the level of priorty you assign to various home features.

3. Know Where You Want To Live

Whether it's a specific zip code, a general region, or a specific community, knowing where you desire to live will help save you time, as your agent is able to concentrate their efforts in the area you desire to live.

Not familiar with the area? Talk to your agent about different areas and communities and they can provide you with the information necessary for you to identify a location that seems to fit your lifestyle.
